BFGoodrich

Off-road dominance and Baja racing heritage

Est. 1870USA

History & Overview

BFGoodrich was founded in 1870 in Akron, Ohio by Benjamin Franklin Goodrich. Goodrich was a Civil War surgeon who relocated to Akron and established the city's first rubber factory, laying the groundwork for what would become one of America's most important manufacturing cities. Production started with fire hoses, rubber belting, and various rubber goods before the company pushed into tires. BFGoodrich produced America's first automobile tire in 1896, just as cars were appearing on American roads for the first time.

The company's drive for engineering firsts continued well into the 20th century. BFGoodrich developed the first tubeless tire in 1947, eliminating the inner tube that had been a fixture of tire construction since the beginning. In 1965, the brand introduced the first radial tire sold in the United States, years before radials became the industry standard. These were genuine engineering milestones, not marketing claims.

BFGoodrich's identity changed permanently through desert racing. The brand entered the Baja 1000, the brutal 1,000-mile off-road race down Mexico's Baja California peninsula, and built a record of dominance no other tire manufacturer has matched. With over 35 overall victories, BFGoodrich tires proved their construction in conditions that expose every weakness: sharp volcanic rock, deep sand, sustained high-speed abuse, and brutal heat. Every generation of the All-Terrain T/A KO series reflects what BFG learned competing in the Sonoran Desert.

Michelin acquired BFGoodrich in 1990, giving the brand access to top-tier research and manufacturing while keeping its focus on performance and off-road applications. Today, BFGoodrich is the tire brand most closely associated with serious truck and Jeep builds. The KO2 all-terrain set the benchmark that others are still chasing, the KM3 mud-terrain handles the extreme end, and the brand's King of the Hammers sponsorship keeps it grounded in real competition.

Popular Tire Lines

g-Force Sport COMP-2

Max Performance Summer

Max performance summer tire for sports cars and sporty sedans driven in warm weather. The g-Hook tread compound delivers strong dry grip, and the directional tread pattern moves water out efficiently for solid wet performance. A dedicated summer tire, not a year-round choice. Available in 15"-20".

g-Force Sport COMP-2 A/S

Ultra High Performance All-Season

All-season version of the Sport COMP-2 for performance drivers who want year-round usability without swapping to dedicated snow tires. All-Terrain T/A KO2

On/Off-Road All-Terrain

The all-terrain tire that redefined the segment and remains the benchmark. Truck and Jeep owners who actually go off-road have made it the best-selling AT tire in the US. CoreGard Technology strengthens sidewalls against cuts and bruising on rocky trails. Carries the 3PMSF severe snow rating, unusual for an all-terrain. Noticeably quieter than its predecessor. 50,000-mile warranty. Available in 15"-20".

Mud-Terrain T/A KM3

Maximum Traction Off-Road

Built for serious off-road use where a standard all-terrain won't cut it. Krawl-TEK compound provides the sticky grip needed on rock surfaces, and linear flex zones help the tread conform to uneven terrain. Wide, open tread blocks self-clean in deep mud. Best for dedicated wheelers, rock crawlers, and overlanders who push into rough terrain regularly. Available in 15"-20".

Trail-Terrain T/A

On-Road/Light Trail All-Season

For crossover and truck owners who want the BFG name and a bit of off-road confidence without the noise and ride penalty of the KO2. Better highway manners and a smoother ride than a traditional all-terrain make it an easy daily driver. 3PMSF severe snow rated. 60,000-mile warranty. Available in 16"-20".

Advantage T/A Sport LT

Highway All-Season Light Truck

Highway touring tire for light trucks and SUVs that mostly stay on pavement. The priority here is comfort, low noise, and longevity rather than off-road toughness. Terrain Capability

BFGoodrich's off-road expertise is unmatched, developed through decades of Baja racing. Here's how their tires perform across different terrain types:

Desert/Sand

Capability:Excellent

The Baja 1000 heritage shows here. KO2 and KM3 excel in loose sand and high-speed desert running where sidewall strength prevents punctures from rocks.

Best tire: KO2 for mixed use, KM3 for deep sand

Rock Crawling

Capability:Excellent

KM3's Krawl-TEK compound was specifically developed for rock grip. Linear flex zones conform to uneven surfaces for maximum traction.

Best tire: Mud-Terrain T/A KM3

Mud

Capability:Very Good

Self-cleaning tread design ejects mud efficiently. KM3 dominates in deep mud, while KO2 handles moderate conditions without sacrificing road manners.

Best tire: KM3 for serious mud, KO2 for occasional

Snow/Ice

Capability:Good

KO2 carries the 3PMSF severe snow rating, unusual for an all-terrain. Siping and compound work well in winter, though dedicated snow tires still excel.

Best tire: All-Terrain T/A KO2

Highway

Capability:Good

KO2 is notably quieter than previous generations. Trail-Terrain T/A bridges the gap for mostly-highway trucks wanting occasional off-road capability.

Recommended Wheel Pairings

Matching the right wheels to your BFGoodrich tires maximizes both performance and aesthetics. Here are our recommendations for off-road builds:

KO2 All-Terrain+Method Race Wheels or Fifteen52

Method's beadlock-style designs complement the KO2's aggressive sidewall. Both brands offer zero-offset options for proper truck stance without excessive poke.

Popular choices:MethodFifteen52
KM3 Mud-Terrain+Steel wheels or heavy-duty forged

For serious rock crawling, steel wheels are expendable and repairable. If going alloy, choose forged wheels that can handle trail abuse without cracking.

Popular choices:Method
Trail-Terrain T/A+OEM-plus cast or flow-formed

Trail-Terrain buyers typically want a cleaner look. Flow-formed wheels from TSW or Niche offer durability with refined styling that matches the tire's dual-purpose nature.

Popular choices:TSWNiche
