History & Overview

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company was founded in 1914 in Akron, Ohio by John F. Schaefer and Claude E. Hart. Originally named The M and M Manufacturing Company, it was renamed Cooper Corporation in 1946 after the brothers I.J. and Arthur Cooper acquired a controlling interest. The company grew steadily through the 20th century, establishing itself as a major American tire manufacturer focused on the replacement tire market.

Cooper became particularly known for their truck and SUV tires, with the Discoverer line becoming a staple in the all-terrain segment. The brand built a loyal following among truck owners who appreciated the combination of durability, off-road capability, and reasonable pricing. Cooper also maintained a presence in motorsport through various grassroots racing programs.

In 2021, Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company acquired Cooper Tire for approximately $2.5 billion, creating the third-largest tire manufacturer globally.
