BBS
Motorsport heritage meets precision engineering
History & Overview
BBS was founded in 1970 in Schiltach, a small town in Germany's Black Forest region, by Heinrich Baumgartner and Klaus Brand. The company name combines their two surnames with 'S' for Schiltach. Both were amateur racers frustrated with the wheels available at the time, and the company started by producing fiberglass body panels for racing cars before recognizing that the bigger opportunity was in the wheels themselves.
In 1972, BBS developed a three-piece wheel construction that became hugely influential in European motorsport. The design allowed racing teams to build wheels at different widths and offsets from the same center, which made them practical and popular in the paddock. By 1983, BBS launched the Super RS, a 17-spoke mesh design that became one of the most recognizable wheels in automotive history. The Super RS remains in production today, largely unchanged from the original.
BBS built a long relationship with Formula 1, supplying forged magnesium wheels to Ferrari and other top teams and accumulating over 4,000 race wins spanning F1, touring car, rally, and endurance racing across multiple series. When Formula 1 switched from 13-inch to 18-inch wheels in 2022, BBS was named the exclusive official wheel supplier for the entire series, with all F1 wheels manufactured at their facility in Takaoka City, Japan.
Manufacturing is split between Germany, Japan, and the United States. In October 2024, KW Automotive acquired BBS's German production plants. The road wheel lineup runs from the CH-R and CH-RII flow formed wheels as an accessible entry point up through the two-piece LM and Super RS, to the fully forged FI monoblock series, which appears as factory equipment on Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren production cars.

Popular Wheels
LM (Le Mans)
2-piece ForgedThe most iconic BBS wheel ever made, introduced in 1994 and inspired by 24 Hours of Le Mans racing wheels. The classic cross-spoke mesh pattern defined a generation of tuner cars and remains a status symbol. Available in 17"-21" with finishes including gold and diamond silver/black.
RS-GT
2-piece ForgedThe lightest of BBS's 2-piece wheels, featuring titanium bolts and a specially processed rim. The RS-GT is the modern evolution of the legendary RS with improved forging technology. Available in 17"-20".
Super RS
2-piece ForgedThe 17-spoke mesh design essentially unchanged since 1983, representing pure BBS heritage. A go-to choice for BMW, Porsche, and VW owners after a period-correct look. Available in 19"-20" sizes, weighing 10.7kg-12.2kg.
FI / FI-R
Forged MonoblockLightweight forged monoblock wheels designed for supercars and high-performance vehicles. Features cross spokes with weight-reduction holes. Often OEM equipment on Porsche, McLaren, and Ferrari. Weighs 7.7kg-10.4kg in 19"-21" sizes.
RI-D
Extra-Super DuraluminThe world's first extra-super duralumin wheel, introduced in 2011. Uses aerospace-grade material for ultra-lightweight construction at 7.3kg-8.7kg. Available in 19"-21".
CH-R / CH-RII
Flow FormedThe accessible entry into the BBS lineup, using counter pressure casting with a flow-formed rim and back-milled spokes. The stainless steel rim protector is a distinctive detail. Good for street builds that want BBS quality without the forged price. Available in 18"-20".

How to Spot Fakes
BBS wheels are frequently counterfeited. Here's how to verify authenticity:
- Genuine wheels have 'BBS' stamps engraved beneath the center cap, along with 'Made in Germany' or 'Made in Japan'
- Look for model number (e.g., 'CH-R') stamped between the spokes in consistent, professional font
- Authentic BBS wheels have consistent, high-quality machining with no rough edges
- Weight should match published specifications. Fakes are typically heavier due to inferior materials
- Genuine multi-piece BBS wheels use high-quality stainless steel or titanium bolts
- RS/LM series should have matching part numbers on all pieces
