Enkei
World's leading aluminum wheel manufacturer
History & Overview
Enkei was founded on October 5, 1950 as Enshu Keigokin Co., Ltd. in Hamamatsu, Japan, a city with a long history as a center for precision manufacturing. The name Enkei translates roughly as 'Enshu lightweight alloy,' reflecting the company's early focus on aviation. Enkei started out manufacturing components for the aircraft industry before the postwar Japanese automotive boom opened up a new direction for the business.
In 1967, Enkei became the first Japanese company to manufacture aluminum wheels domestically, establishing early technical credibility. The bigger leap came with the development of the MAT (Most Advanced Technology) process, which combines Durville casting with flow forming to produce a wheel with near-forged strength at a price much closer to cast. The MAT process became the foundation of Enkei's aftermarket reputation and remains one of the clearest differentiators in the segment today.
Enkei became the official wheel supplier to the McLaren F1 team in 1995, bringing lightweight magnesium race wheel development into their engineering program. The RPF1, introduced in the early 2000s, translated that racing knowledge into an aftermarket wheel. Its twin 6-spoke stress-dispersion design can weigh as little as 9.65 lbs in 15x7, a figure that competitors at higher price points still struggle to match.
The RPF1 went on to dominate track days, time attack competition, and SCCA class racing where wheel weight directly affects lap times. Enkei also supplies OEM wheels to major Japanese manufacturers alongside the aftermarket catalog. The MAT lineup covers everything from the RPF1 to the NT03+M and PF01, with the Tuning Series offering a more affordable cast option for street-driven platforms like the Civic, WRX, and Golf GTI.

How to Spot Fakes
Enkei wheels are frequently counterfeited. Here's how to verify authenticity:
- 'Enkei' stamp must be present on the wheel
- 'Made in Japan' clearly marked, not 'Enkei Japan' or 'Design by Japan'
- QC (Quality Control) sticker on barrel
- 'M.A.T' wording on back of rim
- JWL/VIA certification marks present
- Authentic RPF1s NEVER have engraved logos on the wheel face/spokes
- Red Enkei logo is a separate DECAL included in the box, not on the wheel itself
